Large Russian military ops commence in the Caucasus region

Anti-terrorist op'n begins as part of Kavkaz-'09

MOSCOW, July 2 (Itar-Tass) - The combined group of troops (CGT) in the North Caucasus Military District (NCMD) on Thursday set about conducting a counterterrorist operation within the framework of the Kavkaz (Caucasus)-2009 operational strategic exercises that began on Monday, Lieutenant Colonel Andrei Bobrun, chief of the NCMD information and public relations service, has told Itar-Tass.

"On Thursday, the CGT has completed planning out a counterterrorist operation. The NCMD forces and units have launched a special counterterrorist operation aimed at eliminating the ringleaders and members of conventional terrorist organisations, their bases, and training centers, as well as at accomplishing a set of measures to protect important State facilities," Bobrun said.

"In accordance with the assigned task, participants in the exercises go ahead with activities to reveal and block areas of the concentration of conventional armed gangs," Bobrun pointed out, specifying that "a separate motorised rifle brigade, with permanent station at Buinaksk, has blocked a large armed gang in the foothills of Dagestan". "Measures are being taken to finalise the preparation of combat actions," the NCMD spokesman emphasized.

Bobrum said, "Naval task forces on Thursday drill anti-terrorist activities in the Black Sea and Caspian sea areas, as well as actions to put a stop to sea piracy, poaching, and protect navigation and production activities".

"The NCMD troops operate in real conditions on a vast territory in conjunction with strike, fighter and bombardment aviation. Sophisticated targetry has been established in order to create a real situation and check up in practice the operational readiness of units at the District training ranges," Bobrun pointed out.

The NCMD spokesman said that on Friday, within the scope of tasks being drilled, a battalion-level tactical exercise will be held at the Dalny military range in Dagestan with field firing. Motorised rifle units will drill actions with the support of artillery, tanks, and army aviation helicopters to eliminate armed gangs". "Brigade-, regiment- and battalion-level tactical exercises with field firing will be also held at the military ranges located in the territories of four constituent entities of Russia's Southern Federal District," he pointed out.

Bobrun said, "During regiment-level tactical exercises with field firing, paratroop units will drill actions to repulse an enemy landing force". In the estimate of the NCMD spokesman, "Special attention during battalion-level tactical exercises is devoted to the practical work of commanders and control headquarters of military units and subunits within the new organisational structure".

The Kavkaz-2009 exercises are taking place in the Krasnodar and Stavropol Territories, Astrakhan, Volgograd, and Rostov Regions, the Republics of North Ossetia-Alania, Ingushetia, and Dagestan, as well as in Karachai-Cherkessia and the Chechen Republic.

The total strength of troops involved in the exercises is about 8,500. Various combat and special-purpose vehicles, about 200 tanks, 450 armoured combat cars, and up to 250 artillery guns of various caliber have been activated during the exercises that take place at military ranges and training centers of the NCMD and will end on July 6.

Asian Energy Comments: They must be expecting one heck of a lot of terrorists! You could invade a country or two with that many troops, tanks and guns. Think there might be something else up these boy's sleeve?
